DesIGN foR liFE

The reality show by Phillips Stark was very powerful, specially for industrial design students as it showed exactly what we should expect when entering in the industry. I think Stark was always challenging the students to further enhance their thinking and design process. When watching the episodes the major factor that clicked to me was the field of industrial design is so competitive, and in order to make it to the top you need to be very passionate and love what you’re doing just like the winner of the series Isla. Her passion to design really reflected the work she developed, and it paid off at the end as she won the internship. I really enjoyed watching these episodes because they thought me how to think at a deeper level when designing products, and looking at the different processes that the students used to design was also very interesting. This allows me to adopt the best of their styles and apply it to my own work in the future.
To think that Industrial Design is such a competitive field scares me to some degree, because there are so many designers out there and there is always this intense competition between all of us. Therefore I must develop ways to be different and in order to differentiate myself from the rest I really need to learn new skills and use those skills to develop a totally new methodology that would allow me to be successful as a designer in the competitive world.
I think the students were very lucky to get this opportunity to work with Phillip Stark because his is an international icon in the world of design, I may not have had that opportunity but I do appreciate the video because it educates me to a different level. I would like to see more episodes similar to this, I really enjoyed these episodes

ObJeCTifiED

Objectified is the sort of video that highlights the various design processes different designers undergo to develop products and services. This is very interesting because every designer is familiar with a different process as it is made evident in the video. However the basis of design was quoted in the documentary where good design is innovative, makes a product useful, aesthetic, understandable, honest, consistent in every detail, environmentally friendly and last but not least good design is as little design as possible. This is a very useful quote for me as a designer because it really gives me a guide line when designing a product. When doing studio projects I’m always looking at ways to make my design idea different but this video makes it seem like it is not important to do that in your products. I always had the tendency to design very complex products but this video allowed me to see how successful designers do it.
When I use to study at UWS the teachers always wanted us designers to understand the importance of semantics. I feel like this video is talking about integrating product semantics in a very detailed manner, by showing examples of designers doing this in various products where “products speak for themselves”. I think every product any designer designs, reflects their ability to convey a message to a consumer by using different method such as aesthetics, innovation and etc. By watching this video it allows me to develop my own understanding of what I want my product to convey when designing. What I really found interesting is Jonathan Ive’s designing style in Apple, because his forever pushing himself by reducing the amount of materials and parts they use in their products. As he stated by asking “can we do the job of six parts in one?” he has developed very simple successful products. I think his style of having no design on a product is very interesting by integrating all these product parts and developing a very basic product is advantageous for the user, the environment and the company. This is what I call successful, smart and sleek design.
As a designer myself I want to give products very basic forms that get better with use, so that consumers gain that emotional attachment towards the product. This methodology would be effective if i apply this to all my products because I feel like I am designing a useful product that will last a life time and will not remain on the shelf for 11 months like electronic goods.

11 th Hour

11th Hour is a very interesting video that educates individuals about the impact humans have on the earth, and our environment. The video explained various global and environmental issues in a very well constructed manner which made it very interesting. The explanation of nature and the amount of resources it gave us was very effective because I have never actually thought about nature in this manner. I think the major thing that would really help me, based on this video as a designer is to design products that change consumer habits without them knowing about it. By doing this we designers would allow consumers to use less, and this would lead to an advantage for the environment in the long run. As a designer we must look at the products life cycle and choose the correct material in order to use the least amount, to ensure that the product doesn’t become an issue when no one wants it.
I think sometimes using green materials may require more carbon emission or resources, so the best method to choose the most suitable material for the product and the environment is to have a guide or a book. This book would obviously have all the possible materials that a designer could use that would be most beneficial, by stating its environmental impacts.
What really made me not agree with some parts of the movie was when they suggested decreasing income taxes and increasing the rubbish collection taxes to fix up the way we use our resources. This would not be possible because as they stated due to all these resources we use so many illnesses have been recognised, which leads to the intense need of medical treatment and obviously all the issues dealt with public health comes out of our income taxes. So therefore wouldn’t we need more income tax to look after the health and well being of individuals, rather than introduce new methods of fixing up our consumption pattern?
The major factor that really clicked as a designer in my mind while watching this video was how can designers design products that require less energy and have less effect on the environment? By manufacturing more sustainable products consumers do not need to educate themselves about the environment because we designers are looking after the environment and giving the required service to the user without them knowing. This method would be very effective because it would take place immediately and it occurs without the need of educating individuals. The only way this would happen is to encourage designers to research further into the lifecycle of a product and encourage changes.

story of CaP and TraDE

This story is interesting as it highlights the way politicians deal with issues and how us individuals have to suffer for every decisions these politicians make. I don’t really look into politics or know much about politics because i believe it’s all lies, but watching this video just strengthened my perspective towards politics. These days the world revolves around making money, by ripping people off and as soon as people raise their voice the government just looks at ways to keep everyone’s mouth shut by putting a bandaid on the issue. This is very sad because we will get in trouble for it and the government on the other hand makes money from it. The cap and trade system would obviously not be effective for its introduced purpose, but at least the government is aware of all the pollutions we make and they are doing something about it, it’s better than nothing. It is simple to fix the problem if the government invests into it, but obviously the politicians don’t want to make a hole in their pockets do they?
As a designer I think the suggestion made in the video about paying back ecological dept is a good idea, but there’s all ready so much to pay for in this society i don’t think people can afford to pay anymore. There is already enough technology around that we can use to solve this problem, it’s not hard but to invest and act is hard. The government allows so much funding for such issues which is a shame because these issues should come first but in reality the politicians do not care about the rising concerns of pollution on planet earth.
It is sad that people don’t know about this but i think the most effective method of paying back to the environment for now is to educate people to take action themselves. Encourage them to understand the growing concerns of waste and consumption, then maybe things will start to change in an effective manner in this society.
